Providing Counseling for Individuals, Couples, and Families

With offices in Rochester and Winona, MN.

Individual Therapy:

Individual therapy addresses specific internal/personal issues and concerns. These concerns are typically thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that disrupt their lives (socially, academically, professionally, and/or personally) and frequently negatively impact the lives of those closest to them. The therapeutic framework and approach utilized with each individual is chosen to be developmentally appropriate and offer a good ‘fit’ for the client.

Couples Counseling:

Couples counseling, marriage counseling, and marital counseling all refer to relationship counseling. Relationship counseling focuses on the relationship rather than internal/individual issues. This focus addresses the relational building blocks (trust, communication, etc.), emotional issues (love, hurt, etc.), and process of healing/repairing/rebuilding the relationship. I believe the goal of relationship counseling is always to improve the relationship.

Family Therapy:

Family therapy often addresses communication patterns, internal family relationships, parenting styles/approaches, and/or a child's behavioral issues. Family therapy, like relationship counseling, addresses interactions, patterns of behavior, and the system or unit rather than an individual.  Examples include: addressing the impact of problematic behaviors (addictions, abuse, violence, challenging parental concerns, etc.) as well helping a family dealing/coping with stressors and life changes (personal loss, relocation, financial hardship, divorce, etc.).
